Well, it's been a strange couple of months since my last post. PJD -- bless your heart! -- reminded me that I ought to be holding myself accountable, but life has, again, stood in the way of progress.
At first, it was just my hours at work changing, which upset my exercise schedule. I've learned the hard way that exercise is the only way my body really loses weight. If I just diet, it just comes back. So I know I need to exercise.
But just as I got back into a revised exercise schedule (which, to my shame, took a month), I sprained my knee -- that's what I get for agreeing to a basketball game with The Boys when I hate basketball! -- badly enough that I'm still wearing the brace. Sure, I can exercise my arms (and I have been), but the physical therapy I'm doing is to improve mobility...and it's in small quantities. It's not meant for weight loss or even to build strength, but to keep the stretched muscles and tendons from permanent injury.
So, since I've basically been on hold, so has my poor blog. Until I get my knee back on track, I don't see any point in relaying that I've lost or gained the same five pounds at least five times in the last three months. Insert great, heaving sigh here.
I'm tempted to erase the earlier posts here and just start over when the doctor okays actual exercise. Or just start the Day Whatever count over again. Or just delete the whole thing and maybe/maybe not start another from the very top.
I will say that hefting around a calf-to-thigh, metal-lined leg brace does wonders for making me huff and puff! That has to count for something, right?

Day 55:
284.5
Yup, not much weight loss the last few weeks, which is why I haven't been so strenuous about posting, but I somehow still lost. I got my tax return Friday, and I determined that I needed some new clothes, as the old ones are getting both worn out and kind of boring. That's saying a lot, coming from me, because usually clothes don't get so boring that I'd risk shopping to replace them.
But I did need even a few new clothes, so I went. Nothing big. Just a trip to Wal-mart.
I had to take most of them back today. They were too big. Now, with my casual clothes -- t-shirts, jeans, my long-sleeved denim shirt -- I don't care. I intentionally buy them baggy because I don't like anything that clings. Got too much to cling to, you know. But these were slightly dressier work clothes -- skirts, slacks, nice tops -- and they really do need to fit. So I had to take them back and get 20s.
I was used to buying 24s so they'd fit looser, though I was basically a size 22. Not anymore. The 20s fit great, though they usually hit me in the exact wrong place. I don't know why, but plus sizes have never hit my waist or bust right. I can't explain it. I just live with it or buy men's clothes whenever they'll fit. I usually say that I have a short waist and a long rise, but I don't think my rise is any longer than medium. I do have a terribly short waist, and slightly longer than average legs, so I just look weird in the cardboard cut-out plus sizes.
Admittedly, this body type might not look weird if I were half of myself, like I'm planning, but for now it makes shopping even more terribly irritating than usual. But I did find three good shirts -- and all my friends will be astonished that I bought shirts I can't layer, as that's kind of my thing -- and a skirt, though I took the slacks back and didn't replace them because, as I said, it's nearly impossible to find comfortable slacks.
I also had to get more "dressy" shoes. I wanted some simple lace-up boots with a low heel, maybe some granny boots, but no such luck. First off, they don't fit my calf right. Whoever designs shoes does not consider fat people's needs. I guess they don't think we have any taste, or we wouldn't let ourselves get too fat to wear their creations.
At any rate, boots are out for now. However, I did find some Harley Davidson mules that are both comfortable and sensibly low-heeled without being girlie in the least. Under a pair of pants, they'll look almost like boots, but with a skirt, they'll obviously be what they are. Not too shabby.
Maybe I have a little taste, after all. HA!
And no, before anyone gets excited, I didn't have fun shopping. I don't hate shopping because I'm overweight. I've always hated it, even when I was the tallest and one of the thinnest girls in my class. You know, waaaaay back in the sixth grade. My mom used to shoe-shop like crazy, trying on every pair that caught her eye regardless of size. The woman was always a 6 1/2, but she'd try on every pair between 3 and 10, "because they might be mis-sized". Hand to God.
I was far too ADHD to sit through such torture, so I usually brought a book or even begged to stay in the car, where I could daydream and kick the back of the seat until she was done. Pitiful, ain't it? My brother was smart; he'd ask for a toy and then play happily for the entire rest of the time. I just wanted left out.
But anyway, I didn't particularly enjoy getting smaller clothes because I still can't quite find my "style" beyond jeans and t-shirts. Maybe one of these days when more styles are open to me? Probably not. Sorry, but I'm just not a shopper.
But I am losing weight! Slowly but surely. And I know the exercise is doing good things for me, even if it's not completely visible to anyone but me. Doesn't matter; I'm not doing this for anyone else, anyway.

Day 41:
??
No weigh-in today, as I'm too crazy-busy with the SuperBowl coming up in an hour or so, but I just wanted to say that the wedding was a success on all counts, though I was stuck in a 22 (but it was a loose 22, so I'm satisfied). I can't be too sure until I see the one picture I know I was in, but I think I looked all right.
Woo-hoo!
Now, back to the real world and trying to work that exercise schedule back into play. I've only done my tae bo aerobics twice this week. Shame on me! And I haven't walked at all because all of the outdoor tracks are buried under at least 2 inches of ice.
But I'll get back into it. I have no doubt. I'm too determined this time. You just watch!

Day 34:
285.5
I'm down again. Woo-hoo! Unfortunately, today is D-day. Yup. Today is the day I have to shop.
I guess that means that today is the day I get to figure out if I'm down enough for a 20-22 instead of a 22-24. Yikes.
But I was pretty good this week, food-wise. I wasn't too great yesterday. I actually snacked a bit and had a Coke, but otherwise I stuck to it. And I exercised, but only two nights. I worked late three nights this week (10 and 11 hour days on those days) and was too tired when I got home. But I made up for it by a lengthier session yesterday, and while I couldn't walk the usual track I like because it's still iced over and starting to melt into nasty muck, I did go outside and haul tree limbs into a nice, tidy pile in my backyard. Hey, some of those tree limbs were BIG.
Anyway, wish me luck, because today's gonna be a doozy.

Day 26:
288
I've been a baaaaad, baaaad girl this week. Mind you, a lot of it is because the weather in this part of the country has been terrible and I couldn't get any good, fresh food because I couldn't get out. Ditto with exercise, although nothing really stopped me from doing my tae bo aerobics.
Most of my exercise has come from soft-walking over ice and scraping inches of ice off my car. Not a bad workout, actually. Probably why the count is up only a pound instead of several.
I haven't eaten a lot, but it's been whatever I could find. Boxed stuff -- notorious for carbs and sodium -- and canned stuff, mostly. I just yesterday got some more lettuce after being out for almost the whole week. See, I didn't hit the grocery store last Friday when I got off work and got iced in over the weekend. I did make it to work, but it simply wasn't worth the risk to fight people who can't drive on ice just for healthier food.
But I did get some salad fixins yesterday, in addition to other fresher, more healthy stuff. Lots of rice, too. I'm kind of on a rice kick for dinner. Heh. I can't explain it either. It just sounds good.
So, we'll see next Friday. I'm not even really worried about the wedding dress at the moment because unless it stops snowing and sleeting, I won't be going anyway. Yikes. But I do have my original resolve to consider, so I'll get back on the straight and narrow. I even started this morning.

Day 19:
287.
Actually, I might claim 285.5, but a second weighing because I wasn't balanced very well when the first number popped up tells me it's probably the 287. So, that's down 8 lbs from my starting weight. Eight pounds in just over 2 weeks.
I can do better.
I haven't felt well enough to exercise at all this week, or I would have lost more simply by virtue of not being able to eat much. Sickness would seem to be conducive to weight loss, but my body has always responded better to exercise than to foodlessness.
So, starting tomorrow, even if I'm still so tired, I'll start my tae bo aerobics again and the walking I started the very day I got so sick. I'll also get back into my more regimented menu. I've lived off crackers and soup for a week. Oh, and Gatorade, notorious for those carbs.
Man. Being sick really messed up my whole schedule. I don't have time for that kind of crap! Only two weeks or so until I get that new flashy outfit for my brother's wedding. I know I'm down, maybe even a size already, but I want that 18.
Have I set myself up for failure? Perhaps. But what's the point of stretching up if you aren't reaching for the stars?

Day 16:
Not much to tell this week. I've been sick. I'll try to catch back up here on Friday with the weekly weigh-in to see if I'm back on my right track again yet. It depends on how I feel, because right now I'm not sure I could do 5 minutes of tae bo without passing out from exhaustion.
No clue as to my weight, either. I don't quite dare check because I don't want to know how much I can lose by starving, even if it's just because I'm sick. Anorexia would not sit well on me.
Catch ya later.

Day 11:
289.5
Keeping in mind the "weigh-in once a week" thing is probably a good idea. Thanks to PJD for agreeing!
So, over the first real week (well, 11 days, but I wanna weigh in on Fridays so it's easy to remember) of taking better care of myself, I've lost 5.5 pounds. That ain't too shabby. Plus, with the tae bo aerobics, I may not really feel more graceful or in control yet, but I do notice a difference in how my clothes hang on me. Not looser, per se, but...different. They just hang different. Can't explain it.
Unfortunately, my mom found out about the exercise. I didn't want her to know. Bless her heart, but she always gets so excited when I make any attempt at healthier living, and the solid core of spite that lurks under my better nature makes me want to quit just so she'll shut up about it.
Not that I don't love her and not that I don't want to make her happy by relieving her fears for my health and happiness. I love my mother. But she's 5' tall and maybe weighs 100 lbs, and she's never been much bigger than that. Luckily, I got height from my dad's side of the family, but the thin side passed me right by.
So she just doesn't understand. She thinks I need encouragement (read: constant encouragement) and rooting for. She thinks I need to be told how good I look and how proud she is of me.
I'm not doing this to be thin.
I'll probably never be thin, and I'd probably look all raw-boned and scary if I tried. My body type is meant to be...voluptuous, to use a nice word. I'm pear-shaped with a good bust. I can't be skinny. Even when I was young and the tallest kid in my class, I was never skinny or knock-kneed. I had too much muscle from lifting weights with my brother to ever be skinny.
I don't want to be thin. I just want to be fit. I'm happy with who I am, and most of the time, Mom is, too.
But she does try.
So anyway, my brother is getting married in a month or so, and since Mom found out that I'm toning up (she noticed; I didn't tell her), she's offered to buy me a new dressy outfit (she's hoping for a dress, but I'm ever a tomboy and am hoping to find a nice pants suit) both for the wedding and for my birthday, which is right around the same time. Well, now, it's for a "reward", too.
So, I'll try to see how many sizes I can lose between now and Feb. 3. Even if it's only one, I'll be happy, but now that spiteful part of me wants to say, "One dress size, huh? I'll show you one dress size!" and lose three. I must say that this is the first time that part of me has wanted anything positive!
Hopefully, it'll work. I think I'll take up walking in addition to the tae bo aerobics, though. The only trick is finding a safe but not terribly public place to do it. I'm tempted to walk around the paved paths at the cemetery up the road. I may try it this weekend to see if the owners mind. I mean, it's not like I'll be parading around in spandex or anything. Yuck!
But if I'm really gonna try to drop sizes quick, just sweating won't be good enough. I need to get the ol' heart rate up, too. So, we'll see.
Right now, I'm a size 22-24, depending on what the clothing item is made of. I don't like materials that cling, so I tend to buy them a size larger than I need so I don't have to feel them all day. Let's see if I can manage a 20 in 26 days, ya think?

Day 9:
291
I'm starting to see the wisdom in only weighing in once a week. The fluctuations are mystifying. I don't come even close to "healthy" eating or "real" exercise all weekend, and I lose 3 lbs. I eat more carefully and bust my bohunkus, and I gain a pound.
However, I bet that I'll have lost weight overall by Friday.
So, I think I'll do it that way. Not a daily weight posting, though I'll still try to blog about what I ate and if I exercised -- like I did tonight on this thigh-murdering step thingy of mine -- if for no other reason than to guilt myself into eating right and exercising.
Honesty is a bitch, I tell ya.
But I did pretty well again today. Two sticks of string cheese for breakfast. Yummy salad (with turkey and ham because I made it the night before) for lunch. Turkey casserole and a smaller salad for dinner and a piece of peanut brittle. I figure that, if I only eat a single piece a day, it can't kill me too bad.
Or last more than a week. Ha.
But no snacking today, which is good. No urge to snack, either, which is excellent. I tell you, this version of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet really does kill the cravings that certain carbohydrates (not all carbs, though, so no Atkin's for me) start in me. I really do notice a difference, especially since I'm mildly hypoglycemic. Plus, I can have whatever I want for dinner, so I don't feel deprived of my beloved pasta. God, I love pasta. And bread.
Noooo. I'm not a carbohydrate addict. Whatever gave you that idea?
Anyway, I read TCAD a while back and the way of eating -- I hate the word "diet" because its definition has slipped from the actual meaning, way of eating, to the connotation, way of losing weight -- described therein helped me both lose weight and feel better. I sometimes have terrible sugar crashes where I just about pass out and get all shuddery, but I didn't have a single one while I tried this before. I was on an even keel for the first time in memory.
Unfortunately, it mostly requires fresh food, as boxed dinners and canned foods tend to have ridiculously high carbohydrate levels. Thus, I couldn't afford to keep eating so well. This time, I have a little different strategy: less is more.
Not less as in food portions, though. Just...different foods that tend to cost less. Hopefully, it'll work with my budget, which is always as tight as a pair of size 10 jeans would be on...well, on my thigh, because I'd never get them on further than that.
Yeesh. Thank God I'm trying to do something about it!

Day 8:

It's official. My body is all sorts of weird.
Admittedly, I didn't gorge all weekend. I didn't even overeat once, and I avoided snacks except for a piece of peanut brittle that I simply could not pass up. And I guess I did chase around nieces and my friend's 2-year-olds a bit. But I didn't exercise, and I certainly didn't diet.
And I'm down three pounds. Methinks ominous portents be on the horizon.
But I did well today. I had two sticks of string cheese for breakfast and a salad with my favorite dressing (balsamic vinaigrette) and fresh mushrooms and shredded cheese for lunch. I was going to put some shredded turkey on it, too, but I didn't have time this morning.
I'll be having turkey casserole for dinner, but it's still baking. I just did my tae bo aerobics, though. Kudos for that, because my thighs and trick knee protest every time! I hope that gets better soon so I can feel like I'm not just flopping around.
Anyway, we'll see how the weekend comes back on me at tomorrow's weigh-in. Yikes!
